Neighborhood Watch Program ?

Patty and I went to the North Port Business Expo this evening at Warm Mineral Springs. One of the exhibitors was the North Port Neighborhood Watch ( http://northportneighborhoodwatch.com/ ). This is a volunteer organization that is affiliated with a national program, and has the support of the North Port Police Department as well.

The group offers a basic training academy and requires volunteers to "ride along" with a City Police Officer on patrol to be qualified. No guns, no handcuffs, no martial arts......just eyes and ears riding around the neighborhood and reporting suspicious activities to the police.

It makes me think that having such an organization active in the WVID area might go a long way to stopping the theft of copper wire from along our nice new roadways as well as other possible thefts or vandalism in the district.

Anyone in IslandWalk or Gran Paradiso interested in trying to form a district-wide neighborhood watch program?

Hi Paul,

Sounds like a very good idea to me. I was preparing to contact you to let you know the copper wire thieves have hit GP again. This week they broke into and stole wire from one of our irrigation lift stations. I have been working with the WVID on the lights along US41. It was discovered that the copper wire thieves have stolen about 1000 feet of wire along US41! Some of us in Gran Paradiso are looking into seeing if we can install some video surveillance cameras to try and stop this madness. A neighborhood watch is a great idea and I hope some residents will follow your lead.

We'll see how much interest there is? At last week's WVID meeting I asked JP if he had considered using a private security service to patrol the district. He said he had not, and that he would check into the cost of such a service. Video surveillance might work too. I also wonder if there isn't some type of alarm system that could be installed...when the wire is cut; it sends an alarm to the police?

Speaking of the police....how often have you seen a North Port police cruiser in our area? I can probably count the number of times over the last four years on ONE HAND! Perhaps the district should be making some noise with the City Commissioners about getting better police patrol service?
