US 41 Landscape Lighting Update

The District is working to get the landscape lighting along US 41 rewired. The copper wire thieves not only
stole the wiring along the landscape project, they vandalized the palm uplights, breaking many of them and completely ripping some of them away in their efforts to steal the wires! So many of the lights themselves will have to be replaced. The District has looked into trying to make the lighting harder to tamper with but have been told that the tamper resistant bolts do not stop the thieves as they just break the lights and or posts open and bypass any type of tamper resistant mechanism. The new wiring will be aluminum instead of copper.

Eddie..thanks for the update on the lighting along US 41, and also thanks for becoming a contributer to the blog. I had always hoped this would become a community forum for open discussions; rather than a one man (now two men) show. Thanks.
It looks like you may have made yourself the contributing editor for all things maintenance, landscaping, and engineering?

I can understand wire theft on the desereted sections of the West Villages Pky. There's usually no one there to see anything. BUT I just can't get my head around the same theft on the side of US 41. How could no one have seen anything?

Thanks Paul- yes it seems I decided to hit the "blogging job" full force all of a sudden! :) Just thought I would share the info I received. I try to stay in touch with JP Marchand so as I find out new info, I will post it here for all to see.

I am with you Paul- amazing that someone could go along vandalizing the lighting and stealing the wires along a mile stretch and not be noticed at all on the main roadway.

When the thieves vandalized one of Gran Paradiso's pump stations, they only got about 6 feet of wire-- just 6 feet! How much could that be worth? Just sad really---
