Some of you may have been wondering what are those concrete structures being built along US41 in front of Gran Paradiso? Well, those are the first three sitting areas being constructed with your assessment money. They will be fancy benches some of which will be covered and there will be a total of 15 planned along US 41 and the new West Villages Parkway. Considering the condition the District finds itself in, you can decide for yourself if you think that is where the money should be going.

Yes, very pretty and I'm sure very expensive. Everything happening in West Villages is according to a village plan of development that was created way back in 2005/2006. That plan served as the basis for raising the bond money that is now being spent. Every road, monument, landscape project, or these new pedestrian things was all planed, funded for, and scheduled to happen at certain points in time or at certain percents of completion of the overall community.
Well the bursting of the real estate bubble and the great recession have certainly changed the reality of our world. BUT, it seems that the WVID is continuing to move forward with much or most of that old 2006 plan of development. And why not so.....after all, they already have access to $130 million or so of public bond money that was approved and raised for that purpose! Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead!
Hopefully the seating areas will one day be enjoyed by the residents of the West Villages and not just the copper wire thief. :)
As you can see from the new parkway- this area has every opportunity to be a beautiful and inviting place to live and play. Let's hope that one day soon this entire area will be able to live up to that potential.
I believe that what keeps the momentum rolling is the people who are being paid to perform the services out of "the fund" or our money for our future if you want to call a spade a spade. I can't believe they have spent so much money on things that have to be maintained but are not being used, or are not useful. The only way they can possibly justify it is that they are currently getting a good deal on development costs.
Great movie...."If you build it; they will come". West villages is(was?) a great concept. Building the Parkway and doing all the nice landscaping and other stuff may just attract new residential, retail, or commercial development in the district. The Publix shopping center or Sarasota Memorial Hospital development in the near future could be just the spark needed to get West Villages growing again. Some day, when the sun is shinning again and all is right with the world this may happen. In the mean time, just look at all the jobs we've helped create/keep in the area.
