Who Owns What?

Ever wonder who owns the empty house down the street?  The Sarasota County Property Appraiser's office publishes a spreadsheet listing all property owners in the West Villages Improvement District.  It is updated monthly and can be downloaded at: http://www.sc-pa.com/Downloads/WestVillageImprovement.xls.  I've put a link to the appraiser's monthly updated copy of this spreadsheet at the bottom of the blog homepage.

I believe that any property exemption code starting with a "9"; e.g. 900 or 918, represents a homesteaded property.  In theory, each homeowner should be a Florida resident and is eligible to be a registered voter in the district.  As of Oct 2010, it looks like there are 147 homestead properties in the district.  Assuming 2 owners per property, that would be about 294 resident property owners.  We would need a minimum of 500 to petition for a popularly elected Supervisor to the district Board of Supervisors.

Paul,
I am so glad I found this Blog. We closed on our home in WV in August, and plan on becoming full time residents by mid year 2011. We are looking forward to it. I appriciate all that you do to keep us informed. Maybe with a few more residents, and some representation we can get a traffic light at the entrance into our community before something tragic happens.
Respectfully Submitted,

I'm pleased that you find some value to this blog site. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Don't hold your breath for that traffic light. US Hwy 41 is owned and controlled by the State. They have a bunch of hoops and hurdles to jump through before a light could be installed. Take a look 3 miles West at the Venice East Blvd. - Hwy 41 intersection. It's had only a flashing caution light for the past 14 years that I know of. The intersection serves a community of 1,000 homes and is a major secondary road connecting with Center Rd. to the North. There are dozens of serious accidents each year at this intersection and there have been at least 2 fatalities that I am aware of. STILL NO TRAFFIC LIGHT!!!
