Apparantly, in the great State of Florida, government DOES NOT investigate government! A citizen with issues about their local government must resort to some form of litigation and personally assume all of the costs and risks assoicated with such action. Very Sad!
I have spent the past four weeks emailing and phone calling a number of local and state governments and agencies asking for someone to investigate these three land deals in WVID. I am amazed by the lack of oversight authority that exits within the State of Florida regarding these special taxing districts. So far, every government or agency is telling me why they are NOT the ones to investigate, or directing me to other agencies they think can investigate. Who have I contacted so far? City of North Port Commissioners (not interested at this time), Sarasota Commissioner Shannon Staub (not interested), State Attorney General (got referral), State Auditor General (don't investigate), State Department of Community Affairs (don't investigate), Joint Legislative Budget Committee (don't investigate).
The State Attorney General's office suggested I swear out a complaint with the State Commission on Ethics (http://www.ethics.state.fl.us/ ). Time consuming and expensive as this would initiate a formal legal proceeding requiring me to retain counsel, and should I not prevail, possibly incurring legal fees and court costs relating to "others" defense against the complaint. Guess I could also file a private law suit against the WVID, but then I'd have to again retain counsel, hire my own expert witnesses, pay for my own independent property appraisal reports, etc. Not an appealing option.
I also found out that Governor Christ petitioned for a special Statewide Grand Jury ( http://myfloridalegal.com/19thstatewidegrandjury ) to investigate corruption in Florida. It was formed in February 2010 and was scheduled to meet for at least 12 months. I've visited their website and filed a complaint with them. So far they have not called me back.
So, who's guarding the WVID hen house? The fox of course! There doesn't seem to be a darn thing I can do about it either. Soooo Sad!
